Chief Engineer, Generation Planning

Job Ref. HR: KP1/5B.2/1/3/1608

This position will be reporting to Manager, Power System Planning. The key duties and responsibilities will include;

  • Preparing the Least Cost Power Development Plan (LCPDP) for generation and transmission systems
  • Carrying out generation expansion simulations.
  • Preparing annual and long term power and energy balances.
  • Liaising with energy sector stakeholders on generation strategies.
  • Maintaining data on key indicators of power generation.
  • Planning for power generation in line with power system development objectives.
  • Carrying out Power generation studies and making recommendations for power utilisation.
  • Maintenance, evaluation and regular upgrade of generation planning tools
  • Undertaking economic studies on the power industry to ensure cost effective generation mix.
  • Compiling management reports for internal and external users and other agencies
  • Responsible for managing risk and implementation of mitigation strategies.
  • Ensuring compliance of the Company policies, regulations, standards and
  • procedures to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Coaching, mentoring and developing the team to ensure optimal performance and effective succession planning

Appointment Specification

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field from a recognized Institution.
  • Nine (9) years’ relevant work experience in generation simulation tools, power planning or energy modelling, three (3) of which should be in a Supervisory role.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer with the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK).

Senior Engineer, Generation Planning

Job Ref. HR: KP1/5B.2/1/3/1609
This position will be reporting to Chief Engineer, Generation Planning. The key duties and responsibilities will include;

  • Assist in preparing the Least Cost Power Development Plan (LCPDP) for the power generation and transmission system expansion.
  • Carrying out generation expansion simulations.
  • Preparing annual and long term power and energy balances.
  • Maintaining data on key indicators of power demand and generation.
  • Assist in planning for power generation in line with power system development objectives.
  • Carrying out power generation studies and making recommendations for power utilisation.
  • Maintenance, evaluation and regular upgrade of generation planning tools.
  • Undertaking technical and economic studies on the power industry towards enhancing supply quality and ensuring cost effective generation mix.
  • Assisting in development and implementation of power sector policies.
  • Assisting in technical supporting development and negotiation of Power Purchase Agreements.
  • Compiling management reports for internal and external users and other agencies.
  • Responsible for managing risk and implementation of mitigation strategies.
  • Ensuring compliance of the Company policies, regulations, standards and procedures to enhance operational efficiency.

Senior Engineer, Transmission Planning

Job Ref. HR: KP1/5B.2/1/3/1610

This position will be reporting to Chief Engineer, Transmission Planning. The key duties and responsibilities will include;

  • Assisting in planning for power system transmission network improvement.
  • Liaising with energy sector stakeholders on power transmission strategies.
  • Maintaining power transmission data for modelling and improvement of transmission network.
  • Carrying out studies and making recommendations for power transmission system reinforcement and expansion.
  • Carrying out grid connection impact studies for power plants before commissioning.
  • Carrying out studies to inform outage planning for transmission lines and substations including integration of new ones.
  • Participating in transmission system expansion feasibility studies recommended in the Least Cost Power Development Plan.
  • Maintaining data on annual power and energy demand to facilitate update of the transmission least cost development plan.
  • Preparing status reports on power transmission system network performance
  • Responsible for managing risk and implementation of mitigation strategies.
  • Ensuring compliance of the Company policies, regulations, standards and procedures to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Coaching, mentoring and developing the team to ensure optimal performance and effective succession planning.
