Job Description

- Executing the SAR plan in cooperation with the sub- regional maritime rescue coordination centres;
- Liaising with Kenya civil authority in search and rescue plans

Person Description
For appointment to this grade, an officer must:-
- Bachelor Degree in the Maritime field such as Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering any other relevant qualifications from a recognized institution;
- Master’s Degree in any of the following; Maritime Affairs, Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture or equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution will be an added advantage;
- Certificate of Competency Class 1 (II/2) in accordance with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping 1978,as amended
- Should have experience in search and rescue for a minimum period of three (3) years;
- A Management Course lasting not less than Four (4) weeks from a recognized institution;

Assistant Director, Marine Environment
Job Purpose
Responsible for ensuring protection of marine environment from shipping activities in accordance with International Conventions and national legislations relating to the marine environment.
Job Description
Duties and responsibilities
- Co-ordinates the development of the national oil spill response contingency plan for coastal and inland waterways
- Supervises the review and update of the national oil spill response contingency plan for coastal and inland waters
- Co-ordinates the implementation of the national oil spill response contingency plan for coastal and inland waters
- Co-ordinates the implementation of strategies for monitoring and preventing oil spills in the coastal and inland waters
- Co-operate with relevant stakeholders in the protection of marine environment from shipping activities
- Conduct of pollution prevention inspections of Kenyan ports and navigable waterways
- Conducting public awareness campaigns on prevention of ship source pollution.
- Implementation of International Conventions and other instruments relating to marine pollution response and coordination
- Integrate the climate change action plan into sectoral strategies, action plans and other implementation projections for the assigned legislative and policy functions;

Assistant Director, Safety of Navigation and Casualty Investigation
Job Purpose
Responsible for investigation into maritime casualties and charges of incompetence of seafarers. They are also responsible the receipt, preservation and safe disposal of wrecks in line with international conventions and national legislations. Further, the officers evaluate flag, port and coastal state obligation, performance and effectiveness.
Job Description
- Overseeing the investigations in the maritime field;
- Conducting investigation into maritime casualties including wreck under the Casualty Investigation Code;
- Managing enquiries with respect to charges of incompetence on the part of the seafarers;
- Co-ordinate the implementation of policies relating to safety of navigation and promote the integration of such policies into the national development plan;
- Oversee implementing the Nairobi International Wreck Removal Convention;
- Taking the command and preservation of vessels and lives of persons and cargo when ship is wrecked in Kenyan waters;
- Reporting outcomes of maritime casualty investigations as required by IMO to the DG;

Job Purpose
The licensing and seaborne trade officers are responsible for coordinating and implementing strategies towards orderly development of an efficient and effective framework for provision of optimal commercial maritime services.

- Advise on a system to carry out analysis of seaborne and inland water transport data;
- Assist production of seaborne and inland water transport trade reports;
