Senior Research Analyst (Aquatic Food Loss and Waste)

Key Responsibilities  

  •  Research and Data Analysis: In close cooperation with local and international research partners in Kenya, conduct comprehensive research and data analysis on aquatic food loss and waste, as well as processing and storage technologies (cooling and drying) for fish.
  •  Project Coordination and Support: Assist the WP3 lead in coordinating project activities in selected landing sites in Kenya, ensuring alignment with project objectives and timely execution.
  •  Cross-Country Collaboration: Facilitate communication and collaboration between project teams in Tanzania and Mozambique, ensuring cohesive efforts and knowledge sharing.
  •  Reporting and Documentation: Prepare detailed reports, research papers, and presentations to document project progress and findings. Contribute to academic publications and policy briefs.
  •  Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with project stakeholders, including local communities, NGOs, government bodies, and private sector partners, to gather insights and foster collaborative relationships.
  •  Innovative Solutions Development: Contribute to developing and testing innovative, sustainable solutions in fish processing and loss reduction.

Requirements

  •  Qualification: MSc with nine years of relevant experience in sustainable food systems, focusing on Postharvest Biology and Technology, Food Processing, or a closely related field.
  •  Research and data analysis:  Experience in food loss & waste assessments and postharvest technology dissemination and adoption in developing countries.  
  •  Statistical Tools and Analysis: Acquainted with skills in using statistical analysis software and data visualisation tools.
  •  Knowledge of Sustainable Practices: Understanding sustainable practices and post-harvest climate-smart technologies in fisheries, agriculture, or related sectors.
  •  Communication Skills: Written and oral capabilities, with fluency in English.

Desirable Skills/Experience

  •  Cross-Cultural Teamwork: Proven ability to work with diverse cross-cultural teams.
  •  Project Management and Fisheries: Experience and additional qualifications in project management and marine-based fisheries.
  •  Additional language: Proficiency in additional languages relevant to the overall project locations (Swahili, Portuguese) is advantageous.

Research Analyst – Digital Fisheries

Key Responsibilities  

  • Support research operations, data collection, validation, and reporting on project sites in Kenya.
  • Monitor and guide fisheries data collectors’ regular and timely collection and digital submission of fish landings and sales from remote sites; provide technical support and data validation.
  • Update, deploy, and train local staff and partners in the use of digital data systems, data collection protocols, surveys, and basic data management.
  • Be a point of contact for local community members, project partners, and interested stakeholders about project objectives and information.
  • Facilitate community meetings and training related to project aspects in digital data systems in aquatic food systems.
  • Prepare progress and fieldwork reports.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in a technical, scientific or economic field.
  • At least 3 years’ work experience including work with rural communities
  • Strong working knowledge of MS office packages.
  • Competency with data analysis applications such as SPSS, Minitab, Stata, among others.
  • Strong working knowledge of mapping applications such as ArcGIS or QGIS
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work in multi-cultural, interdisciplinary teams as well as develop close and effective working relationships with a range of partners
  • Proven ability and willingness to carry out independent fieldwork in remote locations
  • Commitment to development objectives in Kenya and the region
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Swahili

Desirable Skills/Experience

  • Experience in fisheries science, agricultural science or other natural science research.
  • Coding experience in R or Python.
  • Quantitative skills and experience in data science, management, databases, and statistics.
  • Project management experience.
