Sustainable Electronics Expert
Specific tasks and responsibilities:
- Under the overall supervision of Head of the IETC and in close coordination with UNEP-IETC, the individual contractor will be responsible for the following tasks:
- Research and Analysis: – Conduct comprehensive research on up-to-dated strategies and actions undertaken by the electronics industry concerning sustainability. – Collect and analyze national government policies, regulations, and initiatives relevant to the sustainable electronics sector targeting developing countries, which were not covered by the previous – Engage with key stakeholders, including industry associations, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations, to gather up-to-date information.
- Report Preparation: – Prepare a detailed report summarizing the updated strategies and actions of the electronics industry and relevant government policies, including analysis of trends, gaps, and opportunities. – Ensure the report includes clear policy recommendations and actionable insights for advancing sustainability in the electronics sector.
- Project Concept Note Development: – Identify potential areas and opportunities for project development that align with UNEP’s objectives and donor priorities. – Develop at least three well-structured project concept notes, including background, objectives, expected outcomes, activities, and budget estimates. – Coordinate with UNEP-IETC and relevant stakeholders to refine and finalize the concept note for donor submission.
- Global Consumer Survey Implementation Support: – Review and assess the methodology and implementation process of the global consumer survey on electronics. – Liaise with survey partners and relevant stakeholders to gather information and feedback on survey progress and challenges. – Prepare a comprehensive report on the implementation of the global consumer survey, including key findings, stakeholder engagement, and recommendations for future surveys.
- Project Management – Manage the circularity in the electronics project in Mexico and Kazakhstan – Manage the Circularity in the electronics project globally and develop the programme related to circularity in the electronics sector.
- Stakeholder Engagement & Coordination under the Circularity in Electronics project: – Facilitate consultations and communication with relevant stakeholders, including government bodies, industry players, consumer groups, and international organizations. – Participate in meetings, workshops, and conferences as needed to present findings and represent UNEP’s work on sustainable electronics.
- Convening working group to develop implementation programme for GFC electronics sector (8) Organize side events in global environmental agreements like the Montreal Protocol and GFC OEWG.
Qualifications/special skills
- Academic qualifications: Masters or equivalent in the field of environmental management, industry sustainability, environmental or industrial engineering, environmental education, economics, and other related areas.
- Experience: At least 10 years of professional experiences in programme development, project management, sector sustainability policy and other sustainable electronics sector related fields.
- Experiences in UN technical report writing. Specific knowledge and skills: Capacity to gather, analyze and synthesize data and generate relevant information (asset).
- Prior experience working with international organizations (desirable).
- Willingness to promote gender equity.
- Cultural sensitivity / Appreciation of diversity.

Responsibilities
- Assists in the coordination of programming and provide support across all phases of GEF project cycle, including quality assurance coordination (e.g., appraisals and screenings), pipeline management (e.g., submissions, reviews, reporting), and follow-ups.
- Compiles, summarizes, and presents basic information/data on specific programmes/project and related topics or issues.
- Reviews project and concept submissions, for completeness and compliance with relevant rules and procedures prior to submission on onward consideration; identifies inconsistencies; distributes project related documents to relevant parties upon approval.
- Reviews budget revisions; verifies availability of funds; ensures necessary approval and entry in computerized budget system.
- Serves as focal point for administrative coordination of programme/project implementation activities, involving extensive liaison with a diverse organizational unit to initiate requests, obtain necessary clearances, process and follow-up on administrative actions, e.g. recruitment and appointment of personnel, travel arrangements, training/study tours, authorization of payments, disbursement of funds, procurement of equipment and services.
- Compiles, summarizes and enters data and information related programme/projects, including maintaining internal databases such as the GEF Coordination registry; drafts related status reports, identifying shortfalls in information, and brings to the attention of management.
- Drafts correspondence on pipeline-related issues (submissions and Work Programme) and prepares and updates periodic reports, briefing notes, graphic and statistical summaries, accounting spreadsheets.
- Provides general office assistance; assist in human resource services; responds to complex information requests and inquiries; reviews, logs and routes incoming correspondence; sets up and maintains files/records; organizes meetings, workshops; handles routine administrative tasks, such as maintaining attendance records, assessing telephone billing.
- Prepares standard terms of reference, obtains necessary clearances, acts as ex-officio in competency-based interview panels, prepares interview panel reports,
- Resolves issues related to recruitment and appointment of personnel, travel arrangements, organization of and participation in training, authorization of payments, disbursement of funds, procurement of equipment and services.
- Provides secretariat services to committees, working groups, ad hoc tasks forces, etc.; drafts and circulates agenda notes to; assembles background documentation; drafts minutes of the meeting; monitors follow-up actions.
- Provides guidance/training to new/junior staff.
- Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making.
- Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Work Experience
- A minimum of five (5) years of experience in programme or project administration, technical cooperation or related area is required.
- The minimum number of years of relevant experience is reduced to three (3) years for candidates who possess a first-level university degree.
- Experience working within programmes and projects related to Global Environment Facility programmes / projects is desirable.
- Experience working with enterprise resource planning (ERP) such as SAP is desirable.
- Experience working within the United Nations Common system or a similar international organization is desirable.
- A minimum of one (1) year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
