Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
This position is located in the Executive Office of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) at the Nairobi duty station. The office of the Deputy Executive Director (DED) provides oversight to UNEP’s effective delivery of the Medium-Term Strategy (MTS), expected results contained in the Programme of Work (Pow), as well as delivering on the UN Reform. Primary focus of this role is to provide organizational, administrative and substantive support to the Special Assistant in advising and assisting the UNEP Deputy Executive Director (DED) in the daily execution of their duties. Under the overall guidance of the Deputy Executive Director and the direct supervision of the Programme Coordinator and Special Assistant to the Deputy Executive Director, the incumbent will carry out the following functions:
Responsibilities
- Works with the Programme Coordinator to facilitate the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects; monitors and analyzes specific aspects of programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and recommends corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and tracks follow-up actions.
- Carries out basic research on selected aspects of programmes, operations and other activities, to include collecting, analyzing and presenting statistical data and other information gathered from diverse sources.
- Drafts/compiles a specific type or types of information communications products for target audiences, to include press releases, media packets and reports, brochures, briefings, video clips, newsletters, websites.
- Provides substantive support for policy coordination and evaluation functions, including the review and analysis of emerging issues and trends, participation in evaluations or research activities and studies. Assists senior officials with briefing notes, background papers and talking points.
- Prepares summaries of articles from a wide variety of sources and drafts a variety of correspondence, and sections of reports.
- Participates in survey initiatives; assists with design of data collection tools; issues data collection tools, reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares preliminary conclusions.
- Contributes to the preparation of various written outputs, e.g., draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications.
- Provides administrative and substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences and missions to include proposing agenda topics, identifying and proposing participants, preparation of background documents and presentations, handling logistics.
- Contributes to the collection and analysis of data as well as identification of trends or patterns and provides draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
- Performs other duties as required.

PLANNING AND ORGANIZING: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently.
Education
- Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Environmental Sciences, Business Administration, Management, Law, Economics or a related field is required.
- A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
- Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable
Work Experience
- A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in environmental project/programme management, strategic planning, policy implementation or related area is required.
- Experience providing substantive, coordination, or advisory support to senior or high-level officials (e.g. senior managers, heads of office, or executive leadership) including the preparation of briefing materials, talking points, presentations, correspondence, and follow-up on strategic or operational actions is required.
- Proven experience in drafting, editing, and presenting high-quality technical, policy, and donor-facing documents, including reports, briefing notes, presentations, and analytical outputs, is required.
- Demonstrated experience in developing, coordinating, and managing international environmental programmes, including multi-country initiatives in developing or transition economies, is required.
- Experience within the United Nations common system or a similar international organization is desirable.
- One (1) year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this job opening, English and French are required. Spanish is desirable.
