Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment”. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The UNEP Climate Change Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and capacity development for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition.

The position is located at UNEP, Climate Change Division, Adaptation and Resilience Branch, Climate Change Adaptation Section at Nairobi duty station. Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Section, the incumbent will perform the following duties and responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Work with partners to manage the strategic implementation, scale-up and evaluation of the Global Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) Fund, including monitoring and analysis, drafting reports and preparing documents and meetings for the management of the Fund.
  • Carry out task management responsibilities and support other adaptation-related projects and programmes, as required.
  • Carry out research, gathering inputs and drafting documents to support programme, policy and normative work related to adaptation.
  • Support the organization of technical meetings including drafting agendas, drafting speaking notes, background notes and participant lists.
  • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
  • Perform any other duties as required.

Allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work. Foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning. Monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary. Uses time efficiently.

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental management, climate change, environmental sciences or related area is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of five (5) years of relevant and progressively responsible work experience in the area of climate change, adaptation, ecosystems or environment-related work is required.
  • At least two year’s experience in providing technical inputs and strategic advice in the implementation of climate change adaptation projects is required.
  • At least two years’ experience in managing project budgets of USD $10M and above is required.
  • Experience working within the United Nations, or in other intergovernmental or comparable international organisations, is desirable.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in monitoring and analysis, drafting technical and meeting reports, preparing supporting documentation and taking responsibility for planning meetings within an international context is desirable Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this job opening, English is required.
