Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. UN-Habitat is the focal point for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. UN-Habitat works with partners to build inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities and communities. UN-Habitat promotes urbanization as a positive transformative force for people and communities, reducing inequality, discrimination and poverty. UN-Habitat’s Global Knowledge and Advocacy Division is responsible for advancing UN-Habitat’s adequate housing and sustainable urbanization by generating cutting-edge research, data-driven insights, digital innovations and capacity development solutions, while advancing compelling messages, narratives and advocacy collaborating with relevant stakeholders to foster transformative and on-the-ground policy action.

This position is located in the Digitalization and Innovation Unit within the Knowledge and Innovation Branch of the Global Knowledge and Advocacy Division (GKAD), UN-Habitat. The incumbent will report directly to the Head of the Digitalization and Innovation Unit. Within delegated authority, the Associate Programme Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

Responsibilities

  • Carries out basic research on selected aspects of programmes, operations and other activities, related to innovation, digitalization and smart cities, including collecting, analyzing and presenting statistical data and other information gathered from diverse sources.
  • Provides substantive support for policy coordination and evaluation functions, including the review and analysis of emerging development issues and trends in innovation, digitalization and smart cities.
  • Assists in performing consulting assignments, in collaboration with the client, by planning facilitating workshops, through other interactive sessions and assisting in developing the action plan the client will use to manage the change.
  • Contributes to the preparation of various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications that relate to innovation, digitalization and smart cities.
  • Provides administrative and substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, identifying and proposed participants, preparation of background documents and presentations, handling logistics, etc.
  • Undertakes outreach activities; participates in the development of training workshops, seminars, etc.; participates in and makes presentations on assigned topics/activities.
  • Participates in field missions, including provision of substantive and administrative support, data collection, etc.
  • Coordinates activities related to budget funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc.) and preparation of related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.).
  • Contributes to the collection and analysis of data as well as identification of trends or patterns and provides draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in business administration, management, economics, environment studies, sustainable development or a related field is required.
  • A first-level degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in the specified fields of studies with two (2) additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in programme or project management related to smart cities or innovation or related area is required.
  • Experience of planning and/or implementing smart city, innovation and digital transformation strategies and conducting smart cities and digital transformation readiness assessment is required.
  • At least two (2) years of working experience within the United Nations system or a similar international organization is required.
  • One (1 ) year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this job opening, English is required.
