About Weza Power
Weza Power is a privately owned & operated electricity distribution company in Burundi. It is working to connect 9 million people by providing electricity to residential & business customers across peri-urban and rural Burundi. Weza Power is the first new private-sector electricity distribution company operating at a national level in sub-Saharan Africa for a decade. The Public Private Partnership (PPP) is financed by a blend of private and public funding, including commercial equity and debt, climate-based and other concessional funding, multilateral donor support, and private grants.
JOB PURPOSE
- The position of Civil Engineer will help Weza Power for the design and managing various construction projects such as medium voltage lines, buildings and others, incorporating international standards and practices where applicable.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct on site investigations in collaboration with surveyors and analyze data (maps, reports, tests, drawings and other)
- Carry out technical and feasibility studies and draw up blueprints for MV lines, substations and other buildings that satisfy technical specifications
- Assess potential risks, materials and costs
- compiling job specifications and supervising tendering procedures
- Participates in the preparation of contracts
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date project documentation, including design specifications, bills of materials, and test reports.
- Assessing in collaboration with E&S team project’s environmental impact and potential risk
- Ensure that designs comply with relevant safety and industry regulations.
- Oversee and mentor staff and liaise with electrical engineers, topography, cartography and drawing
- Monitor progress and compile reports in project status
- Comply with guidelines and regulations including permits, safety etc and deliver technical files and other technical documentation as required
- Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in electrical engineering to drive continuous improvement in our designs.
- Ensure compliance with international construction and safety standards where relevant to the projects.
KEY COMPETENCIES
- Proven working experience in civil engineering
- Excellent knowledge of design and visualizations software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D or similar
- Proficiency in site layout, grading, utility design, erosion control, regulatory approvals etc
- Experience with re-engineering existing assets to meet specific requirements and specifications.
- Good understanding of tendering procedures
- Project management and supervision skills
- Write professional documents (reports, letters, meeting minutes, etc.)
- Demonstrated ability to adapt civil engineering practices to international standards and diverse project environments
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as Civil Engineer, Experience on topographic survey with Total Station is an asset
- Minimum of 2 years of international experience in civil engineering or involvement in projects in multicultural environments
Skills
- Thorough understanding of civil engineering principles, practices, and tools.
- Proficient in computer-assisted design (AutoCAD) and other design, data recording, and analysis software.
- Thorough understanding of safety regulations related to assigned projects.
- Ability to identify and solve complex problems.
- Ability to be both creative and analytical.
- Extremely detail-oriented and accurate.
- Solid math and analytical skills.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.

Languages (Proficiency Level)
- French – Advanced (fluent in both written and spoken communication).
- English – Intermediate (proficient in both written and spoken communication).
- Kirundi – Basic (basic understanding or ability to communicate in common phrases).
WORKING CONDITIONS
- This position is predominantly performed in a professional office environment but may need to be performed in a field environment which includes exposure to environmental conditions (hot, cold, and inclement weather) chemicals, fumes or airborne particles. The role will primarily be performed in Bujumbura, Burundi.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- This position is primarily sedentary and must be able to lift and carry up to 10 kg.
