Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the Agency for Human Settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

The position provides support to the activities of the Secretariat in the preparation, conduct and follow up to the Governing Bodies meetings of UN Habitat: the UN-Habitat Assembly, the Executive Board and the Committee of Permanent Representatives

The post is located at the Secretariat of the Governing Bodies (SGB) in Nairobi Duty Station. Under the direct supervision of the Secretary to the the Governing Bodies, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

Responsibilities

• Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned analytical reports and papers on sensitive and high-profile matters.; monitors and analyzes background papers, talking points, speeches and other correspondence; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and proposes corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and tracks follow-up actions;
• Performs consulting assignments, in collaboration with Member States, by planning and facilitating induction workshops, and participating in negotiation to establish operational guidelines, terms of reference and operational plans and time frames for new operations in liaison with the Secretary;
• Provides substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences of Governing Bodies – to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, Maintains the CPR calendar
• Undertakes outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars; coaches, mentors, and evaluates staff; participates in recruitment and development of training programs;
• Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources
• Prepares responses to written outputs e.g. draft background papers, statements, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, queries of parties.
• Coordinates activities related to budget and funding for the Secretariat, including submissions, progress reports, financial statements; prepares related documents/reports for the work programme and budget.
• Oversee the Governing Bodies website maintenance and in charge of online communications, including SGB log system, to ensure communication reaches the right office and Country for action; Creates databases that track progress, follow-ups and provides other information relevant to assigned area, notably related to documentation and coordination with other units within the Agency;
• Prepares inputs for reports to High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development and other intergovernmental bodies, interagency or expert groups on issues relating to sustainable development.
• Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
• Performs other related duties as required.

PLANNING & ORGANIZING: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently.

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in business administration, management, economics or a related field.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration or related area is required.
  • Experience in coordinating or liaising with Member States, intergovernmental bodies or high-level government officials is required.
  • Experience in writing project progress reports for project Steering Committees, Governance Bodies and Senior Management is desirable.
  • Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
  • NOTE: “fluency equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand), and ” Knowledge of” equals a rating of ” confident” in two of the four areas.

  • Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
