Teaching Librarian
Job Summary
Reporting to the University Librarian, the holder of this position will be responsible for developing library resources and support that enhance learning and teaching, research and professional practice. The role has a strategic lead within the library for research data and outputs and study skills support.
Key Responsibilities
- Apply a blended approach to teaching information literacy credit bearing course, including face-to-face teaching and the development of online activities as appropriate to enhance learning.
- Develop assessment strategies and tools to measure student progress and to adjust instruction accordingly.
- Manage information literacy services for the General Education program and participate in the teaching of non-credit information literacy sessions.
- In partnership with library colleagues, develop and maintain library instructional materials, tutorials, and other learning objects for an array of disciplines and subject areas.
- Coordinate the design and development of new subject guides and update the existing guides.
- Participate in Library Services budget planning and the formulation and review of goals, policies, and procedures.
- Provide research assistance to students including one-on-one and small group support for students particularly with reference to literature searching and scholarly publishing.
- Actively participate in staff development activities and provide training for other Library staff.
- Maintain understanding and current knowledge of developments in librarianship, information work and higher education.
- Compile regular section reports and statistics to inform decision making.
- Participate in library marketing and outreach activities.
- Any other duties as may be assigned.
Minimum Educational Qualifications and professional Experience
- PhD in Library and Information Sciences.
- Professional Librarian qualification.
- Up to date experience (last 2 years) of working in a higher education library.
- Experience in information literacy skills development within a University
Library. - Knowledge of designing and delivering skills development to groups and individuals working at a range of levels
- Experience of producing materials to support online learning, resource retrieval and exploration.

Librarian
Job Summary
Reporting to the Chief Librarian, the holder of this position will be responsible for providing access to information and services to the university community in support of core learning, teaching and research activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Charge and discharge information materials, process library penalty fees and update user records to facilitate utilization of library services and resources.
- Provide reference information to the university community to facilitate information retrieval and access.
- Provide library user education through library orientation and training sessions, to promote users information literacy.
- Organize and maintain library stock to facilitate identification and retrieval of information resources.
- Train and monitor work-study students, interns and attachment students.
- Participate in the weeding of library materials.
- Process and prepare reports of library overdue fines.
- Advice and update assistant to the deans on course material available.
- Receive, verify and physical processing of newly purchased books, journals and other library materials.
- Verify and follow up on unsupplied information resources to ensure that the university does not lose funds for unsupplied resources.
- Catalogue, classify and index information materials.
- Stock taking and reconciliation for the purpose of accurate inventory audit and valuation.
- Biometric registration for new library users and Laptops registration to facilitate library access.
- Process materials for binding to facilitate repairs.
- Identify, retrieve and link items on high demand from circulating / course text sections to reserve section.
- Identify, evaluate and examine audiovisual material to determine the quality of reproduction and the suitability of viewership.
- Assist with library clearances to students, staff and faculty.
- Issue barcodes to library users to facilitate ID processing.

Senior Librarian – Digital Repository
Job Summary
Reporting to the University Librarian, the holder of this position will be responsible for planning, developing, expanding and maintaining both the digital repository and the archives and working collaboratively with Faculty, ICT, Administrators, Staff and Students and also peers in other institutions and organizations in developing a successful institutional repository and archives strategy for USIU-Africa.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer and Manage the Digital Repository and Archives sections.
- Develop and review policies and operational procedures and practices for the operation of the Archives and Digital Repository.
- Plan for and arrange solutions for digital asset preservation to ensure that data and other digital assets remain accessible.
- Spearhead the collection of documents for the repository by identifying resources that merit sustained access and require long term preservation.
- Monitor developments in data standards and best practices and act as a liaison with national and international data organizations.
- Maintain close engagement with related scholarly communication issues including copyright and open access and ensure legal obligations are met relating to creation and retention of paper and electronic records.
- Provide tailored research data management and institutional repository awareness and training opportunities to the university community to foster the adoption of the repository as a scholarly communication tool.
- Develop annual section budgets and reports that inform strategic and operational development.
- Develop an advocacy program, create publicity materials, promote the digital repository both internally and externally and spearhead outreach programs.
- Liaison between University and Database vendors to ensure federated search of resources in the OPAC.
- Administer the Enterprise system and Dspace in liason with ICT department.
- Linking recommended e-course text to their specific courses on blackboard.
- Engage in professional development activities, including participation in conferences, workshops, and professional meetings to keep abreast with current trends etc, and
- Mentor staff in the section to ensure continuity and coordinate the training and appraisal of work-study students, interns and students on attachment within the section.

Principal Librarian – Cataloguing
Job Summary
Reporting to the University Librarian, the holder of this position will be responsible for coordinating the cataloguing, classification and processing of library information resources in accordance with international professional standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the cataloging section to ensure an efficient workflow by preparing annual work plans for the section, and supervising the section staff.
- Develop and review policies and operational procedures and practices for the processing of information resources.
- Create original Machine Readable Cataloguing (MARC) records and update OCLC records to add to the library online catalog.
- Determine appropriate guidelines in applying rules of Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, Library of Congress subject heading policies and MARC21 format for Bibliographic Data, etc
- Maintain accurate Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) records.
- Lead in researching, training staff and implementing new cataloguing techniques and technologies.
- Participate in weeding of library collections and stock take activities and lead the process of stock take clean up.
- Prepare annual section budgets and ensure efficient utilization of the approved budget.
- Compile regular section reports and statistics to inform decision making.
- Engage in professional development activities, including participation in conferences, workshops, professional meetings, etc. to keep abreast with trends in metadata management, resource discovery, etc.
