The intern will assist the team in executing participatory mapping projects, encompassing planning, data collection, spatial analysis, and reporting.

Key duties & responsibilities

  • Implement analyses that use data science to understand and map the relationships between climate, conflict, migration, and peace, with a geographically explicit focus. These analyses will tap into large databases of climate, agriculture, migration, and conflict, and use innovative methods to explore this complex problem.
  • Develop methods that support risk modelling and projection based on climatic and socio-economic data.
  • Engage in participatory mapping initiatives, involving communities in data collection and analysis processes.
  • Contribute to environmental science projects, analyze data, and provide insights into climate-related challenges.
  • Conduct in-depth data analysis, interpret findings, and contribute insights to ongoing research efforts.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, stakeholders, and community members to achieve project objectives.
  • Work collaboratively with the rest of the Climate Security team to develop a deep understanding of the relationships between climate and conflict.
  • Contribute to the writing of high-quality technical notes, project reports, and if of interest also peer- reviewed publications.
  • Other tasks as assigned as relevant to expertise and ongoing or future projects.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a master’s degree in GIS, agricultural science, data science, environmental science, geography, geoinformatics, geospatial, geomatics or a related field.
  • Experience with participatory mapping approaches and community engagement.
  • Familiarity with Open Street Map data and tools
  • Proven experience with spatial analysis, and handling of large geospatial datasets using R and/or Python is a plus.
  • Strong familiarity and experience working with large geospatial climate datasets including climate model outputs (e.g., CMIP5/6), historical climate data (e.g., station data, CHIRPS, CHIRTS), and agricultural datasets such as crop yield data, soils data, etc.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with a focus on climate and environmental issues.
  • Excellent organizational and project management abilities.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • The Postdoctoral Fellow will play a crucial role in developing and implementing the Alliance’s agenda on adaptation tracking. Collaborating closely with the Climate Action Lever’s multidisciplinary teams, One CGIAR Initiatives, and beyond, the candidate will be instrumental in integrating scientific findings around adaptation tracking into actionable insights, thereby enhancing our partners’ impact in mitigating climate risks and reporting on their actions. Responsibilities include conducting cutting-edge research, developing innovative tracking tools, engaging with stakeholders to ensure the relevance and applicability of research outcomes, helping to coordinate and report on projects and contributing to the dissemination of knowledge through publications, presentations, and training. Adaptation tracking is an emerging topic in Climate Action and, in short, this Postdoctoral position will help to consolidate our expertise and push forward our agenda.

Key duties & responsibilities

The role of the Postdoctoral Fellow in Adaptation Tracking is centered on integrating research into actionable strategies for climate adaptation.

  • Desk research to assess existing frameworks, pinpoint effective indicators, and determine the costs associated with tracking adaptation, aiming to refine the tools and methods used in policymaking and program development.
  • Support in designing and conducting field surveys, particularly within African contexts, to test the applicability of these frameworks and ensure they are grounded in real-world effectiveness.
  • Analyzing qualitative and quantitative tools to measure the effectiveness of adaptation efforts, thereby supporting the creation of robust, evidence-based policies and investments in adaptation.
  • Establishing and maintaining high-quality, standardized methodologies that ensure consistency and reliability of research analysis and results documentation.
  • Synthesizing data and narratives collected from various sources to generate a coherent body of evidence that will inform and shape adaptation strategies.
  • Lead workshops to build capacity among colleagues and partners, sharing insights on adaptation tracking to enhance collective understanding and skills.
  • Writing scientific papers and communicating findings to a broad range of stakeholders, ensuring that research translates into practical and impactful climate action.
  • Influencing global climate policy through international negotiations, with a significant focus on translating these discussions into concrete fieldwork and adaptation measures within the African continent.
  • Fostering strategic relationships with a diverse array of internal and external stakeholders.
