Investment Director

The Rols:

An opportunity has arisen for an Investment Director to join a dynamic newly created niche team working in the African Energy Transition landscape at AIIM.  You will play a key leadership role in the team, focusing on origination, execution and asset management of investments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Fund Head to build a scalable strategy to provide catalytic development capital across Africa
  • Lead deals: originate, evaluate, structure, negotiate, execute and manage investments in early-stage development platform or scale up growth companies in the renewables, biofuels, hydrogen or electric vehicles space
  • Work in accordance with the AIIM policies, procedures and relevant good practice
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with all stakeholders, internal and external
  • Operate as an industry leader in the climate space
  • Build, lead and nurture an investment team in Nairobi
  • Develop innovative and appropriate financial structures for complex transactions
  • Provide risk analysis and review of financial statements and valuations
  • Have oversight of bid documents and presentations
  • Have oversight of the asset companies with regard to the setting of strategy, ESG considerations, project implementation and contractual compliance, and serve on Boards
  • Identify technical risk areas across and within assets and develop optimised solutions
  • Leverage cross-industry knowledge into projects to increase shareholder value
  • Be a leader in the AIIM transaction process, including due diligence on potential acquisitions, motivation of investment recommendations and participation in investment committee meetings
  • Ensure deal outcomes are in line with AIIM governance guiding principles through active participation and responsibility in decision making through deal execution processes
  • Profile the AIIM business through representing AIIM funds in negotiations with counterparties on affairs pertaining to shareholder matters such as SHA provisions, SPV resourcing etc
  • Be an active and value-adding member of the team
  • Assuming major changes in policy or consumer behaviour

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Relevant Tertiary Qualification
  • 15+ years relevant experience in investments, ideally both:
    • financial investing experience, with leading investment firms or investing institutions, and
    • experience in the climate industry working in leadership roles in commercial development companies, preferably private equity-backed companies
  • Demonstrable passion for early-stage business development in the climate space
  • Substantial pan-Africa exposure and deep sustainability, energy efficiency, renewables or similar sector experience
  • Substantial infrastructure sector exposure and/or experience in general growth capital for African businesses
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of industry trends, key drivers of value creation, and financial, operational, strategic, and commercial variables
  • Specific financial acumen with the capacity to demonstrate knowledge of and insight into financial principles and processes, and identify inconsistencies in data
  • Ability to apply sound business judgment and an analytical, pragmatic and creative approach to problem solving
  • Demonstrable execution/outcome/delivery skills
  • Proven ability to prioritise between detailed day to day activity, including problem-solving, and longer-term activities and projects
  • Proven ability to sustain high level of performance under pressure with tight deadlines
  • Superior interpersonal and relationship building skills to build strong relationships with external and internal stakeholders across all levels
  • Effective communication skills including strong written and verbal communication competency
  • Good understanding of credit, legal and compliance issues as they apply across Africa
  • French language skills would be a bonus

Investment Manager

The Role:

An opportunity has arisen for a talented Investment Manager to join a dynamic newly created niche team working in the African Energy Transition landscape at AIIM. In this role you will run diligence processes on deals, work with external service providers, manage the analysts/associates in the team, and attend deal meetings. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with originations of deal flow and investment opportunities
  • Assume an investment execution and investment responsibility role within the team
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, external service providers and all internal stakeholders
  • Evaluate, structure, negotiate and develop investment opportunities to close in accordance with the AIIM policies procedures and relevant good practice
  • Take ownership of investment committee slide decks
  • Develop innovative and appropriate financial structures for complex transactions
  • Build out and/or provide oversight of project finance models
  • Conduct risk analysis and review of financial statements and valuations
  • Provide oversight of bid documents and presentations
  • Apply industry/product knowledge to contribute meaningfully to deal origination and ongoing asset management
  • Identify and escalate any relevant transaction dynamics to Fund Head
  • Actively engage with AIIM asset management and operations teams, including ESG, in term of deal execution requirements and see those through
  • Engage in fundraising activities including preparation of materials, joining meetings and investor diligence trips, and ongoing reporting to investors
  • Be an active and value-adding participant in deal meetings and proactively pick up work generated in those meetings
  • Be an active and value-adding member of the team in general
  • Manage the analysts/associates in the team such that they can develop to their full potential

Skills & Experience

  • Relevant Qualification (e.g. Honours Financial or Engineering degree)
  • Significant international experience in climate investing plus transaction experience in Africa – 5+ years of direct deal doing experience and / or working in a relevant climate business development organization
  • Demonstrable passion for early-stage business development in the climate space
  • Well networked, with solid relationships in order to set up for origination work – bankers, lawyers, advisors
  • Financial acumen – the capacity to demonstrate knowledge of and insight into financial principles and processes and identify inconsistencies in data
  • Good working knowledge of key commercial statutes and regulations as well as a general commercial orientation
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrable organisational, planning and prioritising skills
  • Strong financial analysis and modelling skills
  • Strong attention to detail, with a high level of accuracy and ability to perform under pressure
  • Well-developed project management skills/ability to see projects completed
