Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
UNEP’s Early Warning and Assessment Division (EWAD) is responsible for analyzing the state of the global environment, providing early warning information and assessing global and regional environmental trends to catalyze and promote international cooperation and action on the environment.
This post is located in the Foresight Unit of the Big Data Branch in the EWAD Division at the Nairobi duty station. Under the direct supervision of the Head, Foresight Unit and within delegated authority, the incumbent will perform the following duties:
Responsibilities
• Performs consulting assignments, in collaboration with the client, by planning facilitating workshops, through other interactive sessions and assisting in developing the action plan the client will use to manage the change.
• Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources. Assists in policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies.
• Undertakes survey initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identifies problems / issues and prepares conclusions.
• Prepares various written outputs, e.g., draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.
• Provides substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, etc.
• Undertakes outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars, etc.; makes presentations on assigned topics / activities.
• Participates in or lead field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries, etc.
• Coordinates activities related to budget and funding (programme / project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc..) and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.).
• Copy-editing electronic manuscripts of publications, ensuring the accuracy of content, terminology, grammar, syntax, punctuation, spelling and conformity with established United Nations style.
• Research on substantive issues related to publication, using electronic glossaries, terminology databases, and internal and external internet resources; developing electronic templates, technical specifications, and style sheets for the internal production of publications; assuring continuity of style in serially produced publications and conformity to United Nations publishing standards; importing text into desktop publishing software and completing the formatting of text, tabular matter, front matter, and covers, using electronic templates and style sheets.
• Importing graphics, creating infographics and sourcing images and enhancing them using specialized software such as Adobe Creative Suite; reading amended proofs against previous proofs and, incorporating additional editorial alterations as required in successive sets of proofs and giving final approval for publishing; preparing final PDF files for electronic publishing, web posting and archiving with appropriate hyperlinks to related activities within and outside the UN system as required.
• Supervise and provide training to junior and new staff in United Nations styles and publishing standards, as well as in electronic copy preparation, print production and publications production processes.
• Developing posters and brochures for UNEP Scientific meetings and exhibitions.
•Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.

Education
- An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in business administration, management, economics, graphic design, publication, or a related field is required.
- A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
- Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.
Work Experience
- A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration or related area is required.
- Experience with the UN or similar international organization is desirable.
- Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
- Extensive knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud Applications and Microsoft applications is desirable.
Languages
- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position advertised, fluency English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
- NOTE: “Fluency equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand), and ” Knowledge of” equals a rating of ” confident” in two of the four areas.
Assessment
- Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
