Youth and Communication Advisor

Position Purpose

  • The Youth and Communication Advisor will play a key role in supporting and guiding partner organizations for effective implementation of the SBC strategy particularly by mobilizing youth and adolescents in Ipas implementation Counties to create awareness of youth access to sexual reproductive health information and services, improving SRHR care seeking and linking the community with the SRHR service centers/providers.
  • The Advisor will report to the Community Engagement for the internal and external communications for the project initiative, with a strong focus on managing the community-based interventions as well as social media initiatives and overall digital communication as per the Alliance SBC strategy and implementation plan. The Advisor works towards increasing the visibility of the Alliance program through immersive storytelling in traditional and new media platforms and identifying speaking opportunities nationally and regionally and for key spokespeople to elevate their profile and voice. H/She will work with core staff to curate and communicate the impact of the organization through human-interest stories, taking advantage of owned and earned media.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with in-country staff to design and conduct intervention programs that increase young people’s knowledge of sexual and reproductive health and rights, help build leadership skills, and provide the necessary information needed to access Comprehensive Abortion Care services.
  • Contribute to the development of strategies, approaches, project designs, timelines, budgets, and work plans for Health systems, and policy and community engagement in collaboration with the country team.
  • Support the establishment and development of links with organizations, institutions, and interest groups to promote knowledge, skills, and social support so that women can exercise their sexual and reproductive rights.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of community interventions, training programs, and sensitization workshops in coordination with institutions of higher learning/organizations.

  • Contribute to the identification of new partnerships and initiatives and support the strengthening of existing partnerships at the regional level, to promote the inclusion of abortion and/or youth in programs and projects; support local and regional youth-led events; and strengthen the external leadership role of Ipas on youth and abortion.
  • Participate in monitoring and evaluation processes of programs and projects and ensure that community organizations, youth groups, and women’s groups adhere to Ipas standard operating procedures with respect to proposals and activities reporting.
  • Ensure consistent media engagement – where the Alliance becomes the first port-of-call for comment on matters of SRHR and development in Kenya.
  • Communicate the impact of Alliance work by documenting and disseminating information on program activities and campaigns.
  • Support the production and dissemination of key knowledge products such as reports, factsheets, and case studies, considering the needs/preferences of key audiences.
  • Conduct media training to put out evidence-based and values-driven messaging to expand access, health care, and rights.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism/communication or in a related field but a master’s degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of 5+ years of experience at NGO/CSO in implementing, and evaluating Social Behavior Change (SBC) interventions, including community engagement and youth mobilization
  • Experience in designing, implementing, and/or supporting social media campaigns and implementing digital communication strategies
  • Experiences in developing SBC materials and messages, particularly on Reproductive health rights of women and girls.
  • Working experience with learning institutions, and youth activists to promote the health and rights of women and girls including awareness creation on women’s rights and self-esteem.
  • Experience in training facilitation and strong interpersonal communication skill with the ability to communicate and negotiate clearly and effectively at all levels.
  • Ability to frequent traveling to the field at least 40% for supervision, monitoring, follow up/survey.
  • Ability to work as an effective team player.
  • Computer skills in MS Word, Excel & PPT
