We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Head of People & Culture to lead day-to-day HR operations in their respective location (Kenya) while overseeing the People & Culture function across multiple countries. Reporting to the Director of Organizational Development, this role combines operational HR leadership with strategic oversight, ensuring a thriving organizational culture, enhanced employee engagement, and driving HR compliance across our regions. The ideal candidate will excel at driving HR systems, fostering organizational structures, and managing diverse teams in a values-based environment.
Roles, Responsibilities, and Duties
Day-to-Day HR Operations:
- Lead and manage daily HR operations in the assigned location (Kenya or South Africa) as well as for our remote teams, ensuring compliance with local labour laws and effective HR service delivery. This includes recruitment, onboarding, performance management, employee relations matters and payroll, amongst others.
- Serve as the primary HR point of contact for staff in the location, addressing queries and resolving issues promptly.
Strategic Leadership & Management :
- Manage and mentor a team of HR professionals across our different countries of operation (Rwanda, Kenya, South Africa), fostering collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning.
- Provide strategic and tactical HR support to each country HR that is customized for unique business and culture including on recruitment, retention, employee relations, performance management, policy drafting, employee leadership & coaching.
- Oversee and streamline HR operations across multiple countries, ensuring compliance with local regulations and alignment with organizational objectives.
- Collaborate with the Director of Organizational Development to develop and execute policies and strategies that enhance company culture, employee engagement, and talent retention.
- Provide input on organizational structure and job design to align with strategic objectives.
- Act as a culture champion, driving initiatives that reflect the organization’s values and vision.
- Provide leadership and insights tailored to the unique dynamics of Rwanda, Kenya, South Africa, and other operating regions.
Systems & Technology:
- Build scalable processes that support organizational growth while ensuring consistent and effective HR service delivery.
- Implement and manage HR systems to optimize workflows, enhance data accuracy, and improve employee experiences.
- Leverage technology to support decision-making and operational efficiency.
Labor Law & Employee Relations:
- Ensure compliance with labor laws and regulations in all operating regions including Rwanda, South Africa, Kenya and for our remote teams.
- Proactively address HR risks while maintaining a fair and inclusive workplace.
- Coordinate and oversee external labor processes, such as tribunal cases or union negotiations, when required.
Educational Qualifications and Minimum Requirements
- Education: Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management, Industrial Relations, Business Administration, Psychology/Occupational Therapy or related/relevant fields. A Master’s degree in HR or Business Administration is an added advantage.
- Experience: At least 7 years of HR experience, with a minimum of 2 years in a leadership role managing HR operations. Experience managing multiple countries is a plus.
- Knowledge: Strong expertise in labor laws and regulations in Kenya, or South Africa. Familiarity with global HR standards and practices.
