School Counselor – Part Time

Job Summary:

  • The role of the School Counsellor is primarily to provide a professional confidential counselling service for pupils and students at Braeburn Mombasa International School.
  • He/She will report directly to the Heads and Assistant Heads but work closely with the heads of each section( Primary/Secondary)

Qualification and Experience

  • Must possess a Bachelor’s degree in counselling psychology or equivalent
  • Must have at least three (3) years in a busy school set up
  • Experience in an international school is an added advantage
  • Must be registered/licensed by the Counselling Psychology Board of Kenya
  • Must be a member of a counselling or psychology association
  • Must be able to work as a team member
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively and skilfully
  • Must have emotional and physical resilience to handle the array of problems and attend to crisis/emergencies (traumas)
  • Must possess demonstrable organisational skills
  • Must have a bank account, NSSF, SHA and KRA pin
  • Must have a valid Good conduct certificate of less than 3 months before the start date

School Counselor

The key tasks and responsibilities will include but not limited to;

  • Be available for consultation by pupils and staff during agreed working days and hours.
  • Have a clear understanding of keeping children safe, child protection and Safeguarding policies.
  • Follow laid down procedures on reporting risky situations in liaison with school's Designated Safeguarding Leads.
  • Use professional judgment regarding the reporting of serious cases that could impact the well-being of pupils or staff within or outside the school to the headteacher(s)
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and data protection in line with the Child Protection Act, regarding the specific content of any consultation.
  • Liaise with form tutors and teachers of a child where the DSL or Headteacher has agreed that such liaison is to the benefit of the child.
  • Maintain detailed case files on all pupils with whom consultations are carried out.
  • Report to a DSL or Headteacher the areas of general concerns for which consultations have been held and refer the most serious cases to outside counsellors who can follow up with parents.
  • Keep a record of the times of consultations for each pupil.
  • Involve parents in consultations where this is considered advantageous to the child and only after consultation with the Headteacher.
  • Hold group discussions with pupils on various topics of concern as required by the school and guide the discussion such that positive outcomes are achieved. Follow up any cases from such group discussions that indicate a greater need for one on one guidance.
  • Organise for speakers and events involving parents and/or students such as teen talk, bullying, e-safety and specific issues such as parent-child communication.
  • Run workshops for staff on how to deal with various issues and as they arise within the student body.
  • Attend school events, such as parent or staff induction meetings, when asked to do so by the Headteacher
  • Carry out any other task within your capability as required by the Headteacher.

Person specifications:

  • Must possess a bachelor's degree in counseling psychology or equivalent and have at least three (3) years of experience in a busy school setup. Experience in an international school is an added advantage.
  • Must be registered/licensed by the Counseling Psychology Board of Kenya, and a member of a counseling or psychological association and any other professional certification.
  • Be able to work as a team member and should have the ability to communicate effectively and skillfully.
  • Have high emotional and physical resilience to handle the array of problems and attend to
  • crises/emergencies(traumas) and should possess demonstrable organizational skills.
  • Have a valid Good Conduct Certificate less than 3 months before the start date.
  • Have a bank account, NSSF, NHIF, and KRA PIN.

Key Stage 1 and 2 Teacher

Qualification:

  • Class teacher (experience in KS1 or KS2)
  • B.Ed. or degree with post graduate teaching qualification.
  • Experience teaching the UK curriculum and in international schools will be advantageous.

Head of 6th Form

Subject specialist in Chemistry, Mathematics or English required from August 2025.
