- The AIMIX project (Inclusive Artificial Intelligence for Accessible Medical Imaging Across Resource-Limited Settings) is a research project that aims to develop artificial intelligence aided pregnancy screening using low-cost fetal ultrasound. The study is being conducted as a collaboration between the Aga Khan University, The Kilifi County Department of Health, University of Barcelona and other institutions. This position is required to contribute to recruitment of participants, data collection and follow-up for the AIMIX research study and related studies.
- The successful will be required to conduct the following activities at the health facility: Screening and recruitment of study participants, clinical and non-clinical data collection, sample collection and handling, anthropometry assessment and simple clinical assessments and follow-up of participants. Follow-up will include contacting participants for birth outcome data as well as contacting other health facilities in the region to retrieve birth outcome data.
- S/he will also be trained to perform simple ultrasound procedures. He / She will report to the Study Coordinator.
- He / She will be required to comply with stipulated guidelines on all study activities. The study nurse will be required to be sensitive and considerate throughout the encounter with participants, their families and other health facility staff and at all times to display a professional attitude.
- The position is based at Rabai sub-county Hospital in Kilifi county. The role will include some local travel within the study area – between health facilities and to communities. The role may require shift work including nights, weekends and public holidays. The nurse is to have and maintain active practice licenses in Kenya and may be required to contribute to clinical care at the respective health care facilities.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to the design of studies and study activities involving ultrasound in pregnancy and gestational age assessments
- Alongside the study/project coordinator, plan and coordinate all study ultrasound related activities
- Plan patient flows to ensure efficiency
- Ensure seamless flow of patients through the various clinical and research activities
- Train study research assistants on research procedures involving obstetric ultrasound and associated data collection
- Regularly check the quality of procedures and saved videos of scans done by team members to ensure compliance to SOP and good quality
- Regularly check the quality of the data collected for research activities related to ultrasound
- Supervise staff engaged in ultrasound procedures – nurses and other research assistants
- Contribute to preparation of scientific reports and publications
- Be directly involved in participant screening, informed consent, recruitment, follow-up and data collection
- Contribute to engagement with participants and communities at the health facility and in community sites
Requirements
- Liaise with health facility staff to identify potentially eligible study participants for recruitment into specific studies and sub-studies
- Communicate to prospective study participants about the research study
- Screen and recruit study participants including administering informed consent
- Clinical and non-clinical data collection from study participants
- Perform anthropometric measurements and vital signs measurements for study participants
- Collect, transport and log biological samples for the study
- Conduct clinical measurements and clinical tests (eg. point of care tests, bedside tests) for the study
- Conduct special study procedures for the study including simple ultrasound procedures
- Retrieve ultrasound images for research participants from the clinical and research databases
- Retrieve participant data on perinatal outcomes from the clinical databases
- Conduct participant follow up for assessment of perinatal outcomes
- Create summary reports for activities and relevant events affecting the study as guided by the study coordinator
- Attend training sessions and obtain relevant competency in skills essential for the role
- As guided by the study coordinator, plan for data collection activities on a weekly and monthly basis
- To handle study equipment with care and to ensure safe storage
- Any other responsibility as allocated by the study coordinator

Responsibilities

The study is being conducted as a collaboration between the Aga Khan University, The Kilifi County Department of Health, University of Barcelona and other institutions. This position is required to contribute to recruitment of participants, data collection and follow-up for the research study and related studies.
- The successful candidate will be required to design and develop the study database and data collection tools for the study. He/she will also lead study team activities related to data collection, participant and sample ID management, tracking of participant follow-up, management of all data & IT devices, management of user accounts and supporting IT infrastructure at the recruitment sites. His/Her role will involve coordinating data management activities and supervision of data collection teams. S/He will also be the point person in interactions with AKU ICT team, data teams from other research projects in CoEWCH and the collaborating institutions.
- S/He will be required to comply with stipulated guidelines related to informed consent, data collection and data handling and maintain utmost confidentiality of the data.

Responsibilities
Develop and maintain the central and field level (health facility) data handling systems for the study/studies
- Contribute to the design and set up of study databases;
- Manage all study data handling systems: both paper and electronic;
- Testing and troubleshooting data handling systems.
Coordinate all study data activities
- Alongside the study coordinator and data manager, coordinate all study data related activities;
- Ensure synchrony between data related activities and other research and clinical activities at the sites.
Train research and clinical staff on data collection principles and practice
- Prepare training schedules synchronized with other training activities and guided by the study/project coordinator;
- Conduct training related to data entry and data quality and use of devices e.g. Tablets, bar code scanners;
- Continuously assess training needs for the team and arrange appropriate refresher training as needed.
Oversee data collection activities
- Supervise clinical and research teams in their data handling tasks;
- This includes enumerators and nurses as well as other members of the data team.
Data security
- Implement and enforce regular data security activities such as backups, archiving and user administration.
Other Duties
- Preparation and compilation of reports for data and study activity as agreed with supervisors;
- Liaison with the data teams in partnering institutions;
- Be the study contact person with the Aga Khan University’s ICT team in tasks related to data management, internet and intranet connectivity, user accounts and logins and device setup;
- In collaboration with AKU ICT team and other providers – Ensure the network set up, running smoothly and is of sufficient capacity to handle study needs; and
- Facilitate data sharing where appropriate and with necessary approvals.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s level education in any of the following or closely related fields: Information Technology, Computer Science, Statistics, Medical Informatics;
- Training and/or or demonstrable competence in any/most of the following: MS-Access, SQL-Server, MySQL, Oracle, DHIS-2, ODK and ODK-Tracker, REDcap;
- Training and/or demonstrable competence in any of the following statistical packages Stata, SPSS, R;
- At least 1 year progressive data management experience;
- Relevant experience in a health research environment including community and public health facility settings will be an added advantage;
- Relevant experience in multi-centre / multi-country projects will be an added advantage;
- Demonstrable programming proficiency in at least 2 of the following: MS-Access, SQL-Server, MySQL, Oracle, DHIS-2, REDCap, ODK;
- Proficiency with data management procedures: data cleaning, manipulation, summarization, tables, listings, graphics and report generation;
- Experience in programming and troubleshooting electronic field data capture platforms;
